ARGH! How often have you read that on Facebook and wanted to shout ‘cheapskate’?
I get it, we all want to save money where we can and no one wants to spend more than they have to, but there is a reason some things are dirt cheap and we all know what that reason is, don’t we? It usually means it’ll need doing again.
My top tip when you’re near completing your book is to get a proof, see what it looks like, what it feels like, how any pictures look and whether you can read a whole page when the book is open or whether you need to break the spine every time? These are all things you shouldn’t have to worry about, after all, you need a break after writing the book, so let someone else take care of it, someone who will make sure everything is perfect so you’re seen not only as an author but as a damn good one too.
Here are a few questions I get asked regularly about pricing
How much will it cost me to get my book produced and printed?
I do wish I could have one price fits all, but it’s not always possible.
The process is the same for everyone, but the price isn’t (and it’s not based on your bank balance, it’s whether your writing needs slightly more work to get it print-ready)
But, as an idea of costs, I have a 3-step process – a copyedit, a proofread, then a further proofread after the book is laid out.
- Copy editing per 1,000 words = £13.60*
- Proofreading per 1,000 words = £9.80*
What do you think? Not as bad as you might have thought, is it? And, did you know, the minimum number of words a book requires to stop it from looking like a pamphlet when printed is only 30,000.
*These prices may change, depending on the writing ability. A more in-depth copy edit will result in a higher quote.
Then you have the typesetting on top of that, and that really does depend on the style and type of book. Unfortunately, as each job requires a different layout – I don’t use templates, I can’t give a per 1,000-word price. But do get in touch and I can give you a quote.
How much should I sell my book for?
You may not recoup your expenses from the sales of your book, but from the lead generation, you more than likely will. However, it’s important you price your book correctly. £ – Too cheap people will wonder what’s wrong with it. £ – Too expensive and it might put people off. Who wants to be in my 3% gang?
Apparently only 3% of people who want to write a book do. I’d have thought it was higher, but it’s because I work with people from that 3% every day, coaching them and supporting them to get that book written and printed.
